Tips to Build Strong Family Relationship

Building a strong family relationship is essential for families of all types. Whether it is a married couple, a family of four or a single parent and their child, families thrive on love. Families – no matter the size – teach us how to function in the world by providing everyone with love, support, encouragement and compassion they need to make it through life’s toughest spots. While all families go through good and difficult times, a family with healthy connections are still able to interact with one another in a positive way.

Strong family relationships don’t come automatically -- they come with time and effort. Here are some tips from The Huffington Post to help build that relationship most families strive for. 

Tip 1 - Spend quality time together.

Organize some time together as a family or for you and your partner a few times a week – perhaps three meals a week you could sit down to eat as a family. Do activities that each of your family members enjoys, such as playing board games, having a movie night, reading a book together or cooking together. Spending regular time together is what makes a family a tight unit.

Tip 2 – Create traditions.

Family traditions help define who you are as a family. This can mean having dinner together, celebrating a holiday together, going to church together, or going for a walk together. This allows time for the family to share experiences with one another and to reconnect.

Tip 3 - Set boundaries.

We often use boundaries to protect children from harm or danger, but it is important to try to explain why boundaries are there, rather than issuing orders. Healthy and respectful boundaries will help families gain closeness and safety with each other.

Tip 4 - Balance work and home life.

Sometimes balancing your work and home life is not easy, and how you manage it can make quite a difference to your relationship with your partner or family. It is important to have a balance between work and home – be able to work in a way which fits around family commitments.

Strong families have open lines of communication -- where all family members feel heard and respected. The way people talk and listen to each other builds emotional ties and helps make their wants and needs clear. Healthy families should engage in positive and meaningful communication.
